Cozumel hosts triathletes in annual Ironman competition

Cozumel, Quintana roo — The island of Cozumel hosted its first major event since the coronavirus pandemic put the region into lockdown. The Ninth Edition of Ironman 70.3 was held over the weekend with nearly 1,300 participants.

Holly Lawrence and Sam Long were the winners of the 9th edition of Ironman 70.3 Cozumel in the Women’s and Men’s categories, respectively. Cozumel mayor, Pedro Joaquín, congratulated the winners saying “A great recognition to all the triathletes who attended this sporting event of international stature.”

This year’s events included 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling and 21 km of running.

Although officials debated for months about hosting the annual event, authorities decided to go ahead, but under strict health and security measures. The Sunday event drew nearly 1,300 triathletes plus friends and family.

“These types of world-class sporting events allow progress in the economic and tourist reactivation of the island. We were prepared with protocols to protect our inhabitants and visitors,” added Joaquín Delbouis.

The Directorate of Public Safety and Municipal Traffic did not register major incidents in the safety and road systems that were implemented to guarantee the physical integrity of the competitors and inhabitants of the island.

The Director of the Quintana Roo Police in the municipality, Guido Rosas López reported that 210 elements were involved in the implementation of the security protocols, who provided security to the triathletes who participated in this international sports competition.

He also announced that an operational deployment was carried out where ATVs, motorcycles, and patrols were used to monitor the path of the competitors. In addition, Rosas López explained that several agents were appointed at strategic points to direct vehicular traffic, which allowed the sporting event to take place without road mishaps.
