It all started as a challenge to take care of the environment. The Government of San Miguel de Allende bet on the green world and ventured to plant thousands of trees since the beginning of 2020, this August 27 the objective was met, in the city 82 thousand trees were planted.
Mayor Luis Alberto Villarreal said that it would be the greenest and most environmentalist government in the country, with the temporary work of 200 citizens it was achieved.
“I want to be the greenest and most environmentalist government in this country, not in words but in actions and we have a lot to do”, is the commitment made by the municipal president Luis Alberto Villarreal García together with the director of Environment and Sustainability, Francisco Peyret García.
Within the framework of the Year of the Environment and Sustainability , work was carried out on the rehabilitation of soils and reforestation in the communities Agustín González , Doña Juana, Sosnabar, El Membrillo, Puerto de Nieto, San Marcos de Begoña, Los Torres, El Salitrillo and Juan Xidó.
With this plantation, the people of San Miguel de Allende got a temporary job in the middle of the pandemic, with the 2020 Municipal Climate Change Attention Program in which the participation of the Ministry of the Environment and Territorial Planning ( SMAOT ) stands out.
How much was invested?
More than 3 million pesos were invested in the payment of workers, training and technical assistance, transportation, and purchase of trees and magueys.
The private initiative contributed around 1.5 million pesos through different organizations and companies such as Vía Orgánica , Regeneración Internacional, Avalon Fresh, Vento, Viña del Cielo, Rincón del Cielo and Los Labradores.
The rehabilitation of 550 hectares of land was also started in the communities of Los Torres and El Salitrillo, where the National Forestry Commission ( CONAFOR ) also participates.
San Miguel de Allende expects to reforest, for this same year, 400 more hectares in the communities of Puerto de Nieto, Agustín González, Doña Juana and Juan Xidó.
They refuse single-use plastic
This city became one of the first to not use single-use plastics. ´ Zero Plastic, More Life ´ is the name of the campaign that refuses to use bags, straws, and disposables. More than 1,200 establishments joined this cause to take care of the environment.
