Bio-fences collect up to a ton of trash per month in Mazatlán.

The bio-fences installed at three points to prevent trash from reaching the ocean collect up to a ton of garbage per month, with plastic being the main waste collected, said Sofia Trejo Lemus, director of MazConCiencia.

She specified that this civil association has installed three bio-fences: in the Golden Zone, Estero del Yugo, and the Juárez Bridge. The latter is where the largest amount of trash is collected and where they must clean up daily.

“The bio-fences collect a ton per month, so from January to May, they collect approximately five tons,” she said.

Trejo Lemus mentioned that during the rainy season, they collect up to 25 tons of garbage, so they are currently looking into ways to remove the waste from the bio-fences due to the bridge’s current condition.

“We’re going to evaluate what we’ll do if we accumulate a lot of trash. Perhaps the best thing to do would be to remove it by boat,” she said.

The director of MazConCiencia believes that to reduce the amount of trash accumulating in streams and storm drains, we must change our consumption patterns, as most of the products we buy come in materials like plastic, which is sometimes unnecessary for sale.
