Mayor of Mazatlán Estrella Palacios Domínguez resumed her duties at City Hall after taking a leave of absence from office while seeking the Morena candidacy for governor.

The change comes amid an increase in crime in Mazatlán, including an armed attack on Civil Protection Director Oscar Osuna Tirado last Wednesday.

The violence has also left at least 12 intentional homicides during the first days of September, despite the increase in military forces on the streets of the port city.

Estrella Palacios stepped away from office for 72 days while seeking the Morena candidacy for governor. The official is part of the bloc close to Rubén Rocha Moya.

Ultimately, the candidacy went to Morena Senator Imelda Castro Castro.
