CULIACÁN, SINALOA — Bishop of Culiacán Jesús José Herrera Quiñónez has called on the Catholic community and the broader public to participate in an upcoming March for Peace scheduled for Sunday, September 13.
The public mobilization aims to demand safety and tranquility across Sinaloa amid ongoing security challenges that have affected local communities.
To facilitate widespread community participation, Bishop Herrera Quiñónez requested that parish priests suspend all morning masses on September 13 throughout the city’s Catholic churches. Evening services will remain on their regular schedules, allowing congregants to join the morning demonstration without conflicting with parish obligations.
The bishop stressed that building peace requires collective social effort rather than relying solely on government action. “Peace is not built exclusively through institutions,” Herrera Quiñónez stated during his call to action. “It begins in the heart, is learned within the family, and is cultivated throughout our communities.”
The announcement comes as Sinaloa approaches two years of heightened security concerns and cartel-related violence that have disrupted daily routines, local commerce, and public safety for thousands of families across the state. By organizing the march, the Catholic Church seeks to unite citizens, civic organizations, and local families in a peaceful demonstration advocating for the restoration of public order and community safety.
