MAZATLAN. – At least 7 beaches in Mazatlán already have the certification of clean and sustainable beaches. Some of them have maintained their status, while others have recently joined this list, strengthening Mazatlán’s conservation efforts, said Luis Fernando Ortiz Genis, director of the Operadora y Administradora de Playas.

Ortiz Genis mentioned that five beaches in Mazatlán hold the Platinum Beach Certification, while another two have the NOM-120 Beach Certificate from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

“We are doing very well, adding new beaches and the results that were given in the audits were very positive, we are going to keep the ones we have and add a couple more. Gaviotas, Verde Camacho, Holiday Inn and Park Inn are preserved; and add Marriot, Estrella de Mar and Luna Palace, there are five Platinum and two with the NOM-120 ″, he declared.

Referring to NOM-120, this federal agency establishes the requirements and specifications for environmental quality, health, safety, and services for the sustainability of beaches for recreational use and those that are priorities for conservation.

The requirements for the certification of beaches for recreational use include water quality, solid waste management, coastal infrastructure, biodiversity, security and services, as well as environmental education. In the case of priority beaches for conservation, water quality, infrastructure, biodiversity, services, noise pollution, safety, and environmental education are monitored.

The benefits of obtaining this certification include the promotion of environmental quality, health, safety, and beach services, as well as the identification of risks and the improvement of its image, which increases its competitiveness, among other positive aspects.

“The idea is to continue adding sections of certified beaches as a measure to continue protecting our beaches. (During the certification process), equipment, signage, garbage containers, personnel to attend the beaches, both from the hotels and from the authority itself, lifeguards and whatever is involved in these beaches are reviewed,” he said.

In the case of the Platinum Beach Certification, it is sought that all the beaches improve and strengthen the environmental conditions of their surroundings with the support of the private initiative, the government and individuals, to achieve high standards of quality and sustainability.
