MÉRIDA, Yucatán.- Despite the resumption of international cruise activity, this end of the year and the start of 2021 will be very complicated for the cities and destinations of arrival of these luxury ships, such as Progreso, the Association of Culture and Tourism of Latin America (Current).
He indicated that in cruise destinations, some companies have already launched their promotional travel packages for January, February, and March, seeking to gain market share.
The president of Actual, Armando Bojórquez Patron, considered that it will be a very difficult season for cruise destinations, deeply affected by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He added that at the start of the international cruise season, it is only expected to rescue something in these last two months of the year and focus on strategies for 2021.
“It will not be an easy season for the country’s cruise destinations, especially with Carnival’s announcement of withdrawing this year and with the possibility that others could take the same measure. So it will be an atypical and difficult season for all the destinations that make up the cruise industry, “he said.
He considered that cruise destinations such as Cozumel, in Quintana Roo, or Progreso, in Yucatán, are very affected by the inactivity of these ships, since they depend a lot on this important tourist activity.
Bojórquez Patron pointed out that the cruise industry is focused on carrying out all kinds of promotions for next year, there will be cruise companies that will offer packages and discounts for December of this year, January and February 2021, in addition to having the advantage that they do not charge commissions when you have the need to reschedule the trip.
He pointed out that the Florida and Caribbean Cruise Federation, detailed that the reactivation will be moderate as of this month of November, in which their own protocols and health measures will be implemented.
Figures from Datatu revealed that this year Cozumel registered 1,132,101 visitors from cruise ships; Majahual, 455,179 and Progreso, Yucatan, 116,176.
