6 thousand ‘illegal’ vacation room rentals detected in Mazatlan

MAZATLÁN.- The growth that Mazatlan has had, not only in terms of housing, and real estate, but also in tourism products, brought with it a greater demand in the availability of rooms for visitors and, given this, approximately 6,000 rooms for rent have been detected in the port. who are working informally, reported Guillermo Romero Rodríguez, general secretary of the Confederation of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco Servytur).

He explained that by doing so “illegally”, they skip the payment of the 3 percent Lodging Tax and the services that the other 13,000 formal lodging centers do pay.

“The digital platforms are the ones that promote this type of activity, but they are illegal because they are not paying taxes, something that does not pay taxes is illegal because you are marketing it, but you do not pay,” he said.

The businessman said that they do not want what happens in Acapulco, where there are more than 20,000 lodging centers that operate illegally.

Sectur already prepares law to regulate 3%

Given the problem, the Secretary of Tourism in Sinaloa, María del Rosario Torres Noriega, pointed out that they are already working with the Advisory Council and the Secretary of Finance on a law to regulate the proliferation of illegal vacation rentals.

However, she assured us that it is not a problem that should be dealt with “there it goes”, but that it should be acted on with arguments.

“This is not an occurrence, what will happen if we do it on the run? Well, there will be protected and they will win trials, so we are going to do things right, any omission or acts of authority that are generated must be well founded and motivated, ”she said.
