The return of cruise ships to Mazatlan delayed until October

The recovery in this segment of tourism will be slow, since the vessels would operate at 50% of their capacity

Mazatlán, Sinaloa.- It will be for the high tourism season when the first cruise ships could return to the port, announced the Municipal Secretary of Economic Development, Tourism and Fisheries, Luis Terán Tirado.

He recalled that there were two tentative dates, in June, and then they changed it in mid-August, but they are already aware that the arrival of tourist boats will be until the months of October and mid-November.

“Obviously we depend on the vaccination in the United States, which is being carried out, the cruises will begin to arrive again in the month of October,” he said.

He stated that the recovery in this segment of tourism will be slow since a smaller amount is expected in the arrival of tourist boats and with a capacity of more than 60% in the number of passengers.

“Depending on how the Covi-19 is in the United States, they could reach 100% in the month of December, however, it will be a slow arrival, it will not be with the same capacity in the number of cruises that we had in years previous “, expressed.

Terán Tirado explained that once the Covid-19 was declared a pandemic in March 2020, the cruise ships were withdrawn from the Mexican Riviera and for more than a year there is still no exact date for their return.

“Only 32 cruises arrived, out of a total scheduled of 253 cruises, but due to the pandemic it collapsed, leaving a loss of about 26 million dollars due to the lack of cruise arrivals,” he said.
