The Spanish chain decided to close due to the low occupancy generated by the restrictions after the Covid-19

RIU, the Spanish chain that operates about 20 hotels in destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Puerto Vallarta, decided to close some of them due to the low occupancy caused by the isolation restrictions caused by the coronavirus.

In Guadalajara and Mazatlán it will be where they close from this March 23 and until Easter passes.

In a statement, the Spanish company explained that due to the cancellation of airline and tour operator activities, it causes low occupancy in its hotel chain, “which, much to our regret, has led us to make hotel closure decisions, adjusting the operation to the reality of the market right now ”.

The Spaniards announced that they will close in stages and will maintain operations only in the following destinations: Cancun, Nuevo Vallarta, Los Cabos, Costa Mujeres, and Playa del Carmen.

In these hotels, the Spanish firm will receive travelers who already had scheduled trips and “have been unable or unwilling to cancel, or who are unable to return to their country of origin due to flight restrictions imposed by various nations.”

As for the health emergency, the hotel chain explained that only a worker’s commission will be in charge of the maintenance and security of the closed buildings and with the other workers there will be communicated through their unions.

“During the time these establishments are closed, the idea of RIU is that workers can continue to be linked to the company so that when this situation returns to normal, they can return to their usual job after the hotels reopened , something that is expected to be as soon as possible ”.

The Spanish hotel chain has a staff of about 10,000 employees.

Crisis paralyzes tourism sector in Quintana Roo

The closure of flights from abroad -especially from the United States and Europe- and the cascading cancellation of hotel reservations, have generated a reversal in the life expectancy of between 40,000 to 60,000 workers, who were expecting Easter with open arms and today they just beg not to be fired, as tourism is one of the activities most affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Two hotels in the Excellence Colection chain, Azul Fives, and Grupo Xcaret have already announced the temporary closure. The same with the theme parks, restaurants and other negotiations that already report red numbers.

In Cozumel, they are already suffering from the cancellation of cruises, due to the recommendation of US President Donald Trump not to travel on these boats.

Given the storm that is looming for the national tourism sector, and especially for the Mexican Caribbean, all sectors are struggling to overcome the world pandemic situation.
