According to information from the Federal Police, from January to October there were 590 assaults on federal roads, of which 88% went to freight transport.
The time slot that goes from midnight to two in the morning is the most used by robbers to commit robberies to freight and passenger transport on federal roads throughout the country.
According to a request for transparency made by Animal Politico, the Federal Highway Police reported that, between January and October of this year, 590 assaults have been registered on federal roads, of which 88% were stolen to cargo transport, while that 12% were robberies to passenger transport, including passenger buses, combis, and pedestrians.
Of those 590 cases, up to 142 robberies, 24% of the total, were committed between midnight and two in the morning. That is to say, just over 2 in 10 assaults on federal roads to freight and passenger transport occur in that space of time.
And within that time slot, the period from midnight to 1 am is especially risky, as the authorities recorded 126 rounds in that space of just 60 minutes.
The second most dangerous time zone for transit is the one that goes from 8 to 10 in the morning, with 66 cases.
The third is the one that goes from 10 in the morning to 12 at noon, with 58 rounds; the fourth, which goes from 8 in the afternoon to 10 at night, with 38 cases; and the fifth, which goes from 2 to 4 in the afternoon, with 26 cases.
The schedule with the least assaults on federal roads is from 2 to 4 in the morning, with 22 cases.
The most dangerous hours and sections
Political Animal published Wednesday that the most dangerous federal highway for cargo transportation is 150D, which connects Mexico City with Veracruz, according to information released by the Federal Police to this medium.
This highway is divided into two stretches of 390 kilometers: one, the Mexico-Puebla highway, and two, the Puebla-Córdoba highway, in the state of Veracruz.
Between both sections they register 131 assaults, which gives an average of one assault for every 3 kilometers of track.
The time zone most used by thieves in this section is also the one that goes from midnight to 2 in the morning with 40 cases, 30% of the total.
Another federal highway with more assaults is 15D, on the Maravatío-Zapotlanejo section, passing through the state of Michoacán, with 27 assaults in 10 months.
In this case, the strip of midnight at 2 in the morning is also the one that registered the most assaults, with 10 cases, but closely followed by the strip that goes from 8 to 10 in the morning, with 9.
On the Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca direct highway, which is in the top4 of tracks with the most assaults registered by the Federal Police, the riskiest time zone is shared between midnight and two o’clock in the morning, and 12 noon at 4 in the afternoon, with 4 rounds in both cases.
As for the fifth most dangerous road, the one that goes from Entronque La Tinaja to Cosoleacaque, in the state of Veracruz, the hourly section with the most assaults is the one that runs from 6 to 8 in the morning.
Road robberies dropped, says Government
On the other hand, during the morning conference of President López Obrador on Wednesday, the Secretary of Public Security, Alfonso Durazo, presumed a reduction in the common jurisdiction of road robberies to cargo transportation, thanks to a joint program with the Council Business Coordinator and the transport chambers.
“Of course, this does not mean that there is not a single robbery, it means that they have been falling sensitively and this has even deserved recognition from the business organizations themselves participating in the program,” Durazo said.
After the conference, the Ministry of Security provided a document with the evolution of thefts at the national level, in the period from 2015 to 2019.
According to official information, between January and November of this year, the 32 state prosecutors in the country filed 10,639 complaints of robbery of carriers with violence and without violence, of which 42% are concentrated in the State of Mexico.
In fact, this figure of 2019 is 3% lower than that registered in the same period of the last year of Peña Nieto’s government, when 10,994 complaints were counted.
In addition, the number of assaults recorded in June this year, 812 complaints, is the lowest in three years, and since July the statistics have remained below the barrier of one thousand complaints of road robberies, after December of last year a historical peak of one thousand 209 cases will be recorded.
However, if compared to recent years, this year’s figure is still far from significant reduction.
For example, if compared to 2015, the number of road robberies of this 2019 is still 74.5% higher than that of four years ago, when 6,095 complaints were counted for this illegal.
