The Secretary of Economy in Sinaloa, Javier Lizárraga Mercado, assured that Sinaloa is very close to expanding the zone of protection of the appellation of origin of mezcal, and include the municipalities of San Ignacio, Mazatlán, Concordia and Rosario.
Lizárraga Mercado said that mezcal is the new market niche in Mexico and even in some international markets, therefore the denomination of origin of mezcal in Sinaloa would be an important source of income for the economy of the state.
For his part, the mayor of Mazatlan, Luis Guillermo Benitez Torres said he will also seek the denomination of tequila, with which Sinaloa would benefit, since an important part of southern Sinaloa sows blue agave and if it will have the denomination of tequila I could sell at a higher price.
The mezcal industry was present in Sinaloa from 1850, with an artisanal process, and expanded in the south of the state, achieving third place in national production, until this activity was banned during the time of Governor Leopoldo Sánchez Celis
