Business leaders, civic advocates, citizens, and opposition lawmakers gathered outside the Sinaloa State Government Palace in Culiacán to demand the definitive removal of Governor Rubén Rocha Moya and his political inner circle. Demonstrators placed a large banner reading “Fuera Rocha” (“Out with Rocha”) on the building’s steps, citing an ongoing political crisis, widespread violence, and economic paralysis in the state.
The protest comes amid intense scrutiny and allegations by U.S. authorities that the Morena party governor protected the “Los Chapitos” faction of the Sinaloa Cartel to facilitate drug trafficking. During the demonstration, political figures asserted that the federal government is increasingly distancing itself from Rocha Moya, interpreting the shift as implicit acknowledgment of his alleged connections to organized crime.
Federal Deputy Mario Zamora of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) highlighted the drastic change in tone from federal leaders over recent months. He noted that while party colleagues and the presidency previously rallied behind Rocha Moya, federal officials are now publicly suggesting it was appropriate for him to request a leave of absence. Meanwhile, PRI state legislator Paola Gárate stated that opposition parties are currently evaluating a political impeachment trial (juicio político) against Rocha Moya to strip him of his constitutional protections and officially hold him accountable.
Business leaders also voiced deep concerns over the state’s direction. Chef Miguel Taniyama, a prominent local business figure, called on federal authorities to appoint a leader with moral integrity, intellectual capacity, and genuine empathy to restore peace. Additionally, Martha Reyes, president of Coparmex Sinaloa, urged state legislators to appoint a permanent substitute governor rather than an interim appointment, ensuring that the governor on leave cannot return to power.
