President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed strong disapproval regarding Rubén Rocha Moya’s brief attempt to resume his duties as governor of Sinaloa, calling his decision “imprudent, to say the least.” Speaking during her morning press conference, Sheinbaum stressed that personal interests must never take precedence over the well-being of the people of Sinaloa and Mexico.
The political situation unfolded after Rocha Moya requested a new indefinite leave of absence from the Sinaloa State Congress, just one day after announcing his return. He had initially stepped down temporarily on May 1 amid investigations into alleged ties between Mexican officials and organized crime groups, allegations stemming from U.S. authorities. While Rocha Moya claimed the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) found no evidence against him, his swift attempt to reclaim office generated significant controversy.
Addressing reporters, President Sheinbaum emphasized that the Sinaloa State Congress must autonomously navigate the transition process and select an interim governor to conclude the administrative term. She highlighted that the appointed individual must possess “capacity, honesty, professionalism, and dedication to the people of Sinaloa” to ensure governance, maintain peace, and guarantee proper conditions for upcoming elections managed by the National Electoral Institute (INE) and state electoral bodies.
Sheinbaum clarified that there is no dissolution of powers (desaparición de poderes) in the state, confirming that the local legislature remains fully operational to make the constitutional appointment. She also noted that while the U.S. Department of Justice requested urgent extradition measures, it has yet to present formal evidence to Mexican authorities, leaving the ongoing investigation in the hands of the FGR.
