Tortillas Tía María, the family business in Sinaloa where everyone gets their hands in the dough.

Every morning, the aroma of freshly made tortillas welcomes those passing by the corner of Ley Express, on Las Torres Boulevard in the Terranova neighborhood.

There, you can find the already famous and “well-traveled” Tortillas Tía María, a family business where Heraclio, María, and their children have found a way to move forward through hard work, unity, and plenty of love.

Although the business has been established at that location for almost a year, its story began much earlier:

During the pandemic, they started selling tortillas from their home until they decided to get closer to the community and offer their products in a place where they are now well known by neighbors and customers who return for the flavor of handmade food.

From Monday to Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., they prepare flour tortillas, sweet gorditas, pork beans, roasted pepper strips, and other snacks made entirely by hand.

For Heraclio, making tortillas is a skill he learned as a child while growing up on his ranch near Badiraguato. Over the years, that craft also became something he passed on to María, who remembers that when they began their life together, he taught her from scratch how to prepare tortillas and different dishes.

“He taught me how to do everything,” she shares with a smile.

A business where every family member contributes

The most special part of the business is that the entire family participates. Edgar, only six years old, already accompanies his parents with enthusiasm, while Valeria learned how to make tortillas at the age of seven and says that what she enjoys most is spending time with them while they work. Heraclio also joins them during every workday.

For María, involving her children means giving them much more than just a skill. It means teaching them the value of effort and preparing them for any situation in life:

“Tomorrow, if one of us is not here, they already know how to work. They know what it takes to earn a living,” she says proudly.

Every day, they prepare between 20 and 30 kilograms of dough, enough to make around one thousand handmade tortillas, without preservatives and always fresh from the griddle.

They say this freshness is what makes their products special and has led customers from different parts of Culiacán, and even people traveling outside the state, to take their tortillas with them to share with their families.

Despite the challenges they have faced, Heraclio and María agree that giving up has never been an option. Their message to those who want to start a business is to remain consistent, be patient, and trust that effort always brings results.

At Tortillas Tía María, every tortilla contains flour, water, and salt, but also the love of a family that found in shared work the best recipe for moving forward.

And at the corner of Ley Express in Terranova, that story is cooked every day and served warm to every customer who arrives.
