ESCUINAPA, SINALOA — A car bomb explosion shook the municipality of Escuinapa, Sinaloa, early Tuesday morning, cutting off electricity to a large portion of the area and deepening fear across a region already plagued by an escalating wave of organized crime.
The blast occurred near the site where two people—including Grecia Guadalupe, a 14-year-old adaptive sports athlete, and her uncle—had been shot and killed just a day prior. No immediate casualties were reported from Tuesday’s detonation, but the shockwave caused extensive local panic and knocked down power lines, prompting school suspensions in at least 12 local campuses due to electricity outages.
Military personnel and federal security forces quickly cordoned off the area to conduct forensic investigations and secure the perimeter against further threats.
Following the explosion, Sinaloa Governor Yeraldine Bonilla and Escuinapa Mayor Víctor Díaz Simental convened an emergency security meeting. Governor Bonilla promised that the state would not abandon the municipality, pledging a swift reinforcement of security forces.
Local human rights groups and residents continue to express grave concern over the unprecedented escalation, which also recently featured drone-delivered explosives.
