During the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, Sinaloa Civil Protection responded to a total of 19 incidents in various municipalities throughout the state, most of them related to traffic accidents and vehicles running off the road, reported the agency’s director, Roy Navarrete Cuevas.
The official detailed that 11 of the reports were concentrated between the night of December 31st and the early morning of January 1st, while the remaining eight were registered throughout the following day, some with injuries and others without serious consequences.
As part of the overall report, Navarrete Cuevas confirmed the death of one person by drowning in Mazatlán. The incident occurred in the Olas Altas area, where the victim was swimming and began to drown; despite receiving CPR, upon arrival of the Red Cross, it was confirmed that the person no longer had vital signs.
“We had a large-scale operation with all the emergency services, and we are still working on it. The result was a total of 19 reports, most of them involving injuries, and one fatality,” stated the head of the state Civil Protection agency.
In addition to the fatality, incidents were reported in municipalities such as Choix, El Dorado, Culiacán, Ahome, and Guasave. These were attended to by emergency services as part of the Guadalupe-Reyes operation, which remains active and will conclude on January 6.
In its assessment of the holiday season, the state agency reported that nine people were injured by fireworks: five during Christmas celebrations and four more on New Year’s Eve. The ages of those affected ranged from 7 to 35 years old.
In Culiacán, four people were injured by fireworks during both celebrations. Navarrete Cuevas noted that this figure represents a decrease compared to the previous year, when 21 cases were recorded, which he attributed to greater cooperation from the public.
Finally, he reported that 615 kilograms of fireworks were seized throughout the state during the operations, nearly a ton less compared to the same period last year, as part of the preventative measures to reduce risks during the celebrations.
