During 2025, 715 sea turtle nests were rescued on Mazatlán’s beaches as part of a protection program operating along a 16-kilometer stretch of coastline.
This stretch extends from Cerritos Beach to Olas Altas.
The director of the Mazatlán Beach Management and Operations Authority, Ángel García Contreras, said that most of the hatchlings have already emerged and that very few active nests remain at the end of the year.
“There are still a few nests left, but they have basically already hatched, obviously in the area with the highest concentration,” said García Contreras.
The annual tally includes tens of thousands of eggs incubated and hatchlings released into the sea.
“There are 715 nests rescued, 77,103 eggs incubated, and 57,210 released,” he added.
García Contreras noted that the data covers January through December, although most of the work was concentrated during the peak season, when nighttime beach patrols are in effect.
“The sea turtle protection program alone assigns us a 16-kilometer stretch of coastline, from Cerritos to Olas Altas, to patrol each week. This data covers January through December,” he added.
The peak release period occurs between July and December, with a clear surge in the last months of the year.
“The largest number of releases takes place during the peak season, which begins with the start of the nighttime patrol program, from July 1st to December 30th. That is the peak season for both nesting and releases,” he revealed.
According to the annual report, only about 10 turtles died during the year.
