Mazatlán said goodbye to 2024 with an event that reflects the environmental commitment of its community. On the morning of December 31, dozens of volunteers gathered at Playa Norte for a clean-up day called by the Mazconciencia collective.

From the early hours of the day, citizens, local organizations and tourists worked together to combat the accumulation of garbage that affects the beaches of the port.

The meeting point was the fishermen’s hut, where participants armed themselves with gloves, bags and a lot of willingness to collect waste, mainly plastic and disposable waste, that invades the sandbanks and marine ecosystems.

Anti-Plastic Law is still not being enforced in Mazatlán
Despite the implementation of the Anti-Plastic Law in Mazatlán, the accumulation of waste on the beaches has increased, showing the need to reinforce environmental actions.

The garbage found on the beaches not only affects their beauty, but also the marine species that depend on these areas to reproduce.

“This cleanup came about because there was a lot of trash on this beach specifically, and the truth is that we are concerned about this beach, because it is a rocky area that is used for species to reproduce and grow,” said Sofía Trejo Lemus, director of the Mazconciencia collective to Línea Directa Portal.

Trejo emphasized the importance of complementing legal regulations with community efforts such as this cleanup, in which citizens have an active role in mitigating the environmental impact.

The collective believes that although this law is a step forward, its compliance has been insufficient, which is why they are organized into groups to clean up the beaches of the port, in order to remind citizens and visitors that caring for the planet is everyone’s responsibility.

Playa Norte: a priority area in Mazatlán

The choice of Playa Norte as the site of this cleanup day was not a coincidence, since this space has significant environmental importance for the port of Mazatlán. This place is known for its rocky ecosystem, which makes it a fundamental habitat for the reproduction and growth of various marine species.

Its natural environment makes it especially vulnerable to the effects of pollution, highlighting the urgency of protecting it.

However, Playa Norte faces great challenges due to the accumulation of garbage, a problem that is aggravated by its location, since it receives waste washed up from other coastal areas.

During the cleaning day, volunteers found a large amount of plastic bottles, disposable cutlery and other types of solid waste that, if not removed, represent a direct threat to marine and terrestrial biodiversity.

In addition to affecting the natural environment, this waste alters the balance of ecosystems and puts at risk the species that depend on the beach for their life cycles. Therefore, actions such as this day are not only necessary to maintain visual cleanliness, but also to guarantee the survival of the species that inhabit this area.

Commitment to a more sustainable future

The event not only sought to clean the beaches, but also to raise awareness among Mazatlan residents and tourists.

Mazconciencia already has plans to continue its work in 2025, with a cleaning day scheduled for January. The organization hopes that these actions will inspire more people to join in and reflect on the impact of their daily habits on the environment.

With this event, Mazatlán closed the year by sending a powerful message: taking care of the beaches is not only an environmental duty, but also a way to preserve the natural heritage for future generations.
