Mayor Luis Guillermo Benítez Torres points out that they will seek to become a gay-friendly destination that is safe for people who belong to the LGBT+ community.

MAZATLAN.- Mazatlan wants to place itself on a par with other cities and states in Mexico that are making efforts to offer an effective and attractive tourist offer to the community of sexual diversity.

Mayor Luis Guillermo Benítez Torres pointed out that the port is seeking gay-friendly certification; this is part of its commitment to continue growing as an inclusive tourist destination.

But to achieve this certification, it is required that people from the LGBTQ+ community who visit us have guaranteed safe places such as transportation, hotels, and restaurants.

So all public establishments that receive training will receive a certification that will mean that it is a safe place for people in the community.

“Part of the process that we are going to implement is firstly to train people who work in the hotel industry from the city’s mobility services; to all sectors, precisely so that they treat any person with dignity and with respect. Those who receive this training will have a logo that will identify them.”

Although he did not specify a date, the president will receive Oriol Pamies, founder of Queer Destinations, in the coming months. A company is in charge of carrying out the measurements and granting the certifications so that the destinations and services can verify that they are capable of serving that group of consumers in the best way.

“We had a very interesting interview with an international leader, Oriol Pamies and he explained to us what the idea of what they do is, they promote tourism for people who belong to the movement in the world and believe that Mazatlan is a good option for this type of tourism and we are convinced that it is. The idea is that these groups feel respected and safe.”

“In fact, there was already an announcement by Oriol Pamies, its CEO, in Forbes, during the Tianguis, where he mentioned that Mazatlán is part of the destinations that will be trained in the segment,” he stressed.

What destinations are certified? Just a few weeks ago, at the Tianguis Turístico 2022, Los Cabos, in Baja California Sur, became the first tourist destination in Mexico and in the world to receive the Queer Destinations distinction.

It is expected that by the end of the year, 10 destinations will obtain this training, among which are: Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, Chihuahua, Morelos, and CDMX.

The World Tourism Organization estimates that by 2030 there will be 180 million LGBT travelers. Sectur calculates that in 2018 there were 3.5 million people from that community who visited Mexico.

In addition to these agreements, an agreement was reached for more routes with the airlines Aeroméxico and TAR.

This with the vision of extending the area connectivity of the port to all of Mexico and abroad.

“We are happy to return to Mazatlan, with great agreements, great commitments, with promises and acceptance of twinning with key cities in Mazatlan,” he stressed.

The connectivity vision with Aeroméxico is to increase the number of flights with Mexico City and Tijuana, as well as achieve new routes. With TAR the objective is to connect El Bajío with the Pacific, and in the near future, El Paso, Texas, and Mexicali with direct flights.

Benítez Torres was happy with the results of the Mazatlan stand, in addition to endorsing and coinciding with the same visions in the country’s tourism promotion.
