MAZATLAN. – Now the month of February is just around the corner and although it is one of the shortest months, it is also one where some important events take place, such as the Day of Candelaria or the start of Carnival.

February 02- Candelaria Day

Candelaria day is celebrated exactly 40 days after Christmas, that is, on February 2, and it is because, on that day, the Virgin purified herself after the birth of the child God and brought candles to the Church so that they could be Blessed.

This was the original celebration, however, at the time of the Viceroyalty it arrived in Mexico and the day of Candelaria coincided with the planting season that began on February 2 and was celebrated with exquisite tamales as the main dish. From there, this festivity began to be linked with that of the Three Wise Men. February 05- Day of the Mexican Constitution

February 24- Beginning of the Carnival

Carnival is a festivity that takes place every year between the months of February and March.


It occurs 40 days before Christian Lent so the date varies each year. It includes the days between Fat Thursday and Shrove Tuesday.

The festivities are dominated by music, shows, concerts, and costumes, so it is believed that carnivals are celebrations in which everything is allowed, thus, the most characteristic costumes usually wear masks, which allows anonymity to be preserved.

Start of the Mazatlan International Carnival

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, the theme of the 2022 Mazatlan International Carnival “Lanao, the journey continues” remains in doubt. So far the authorities have not made any decision.

In the event that it takes place, the maximum Mazatlan party will be held from Thursday, February 24 to Tuesday, March 1.

One of its main features is the abundance of music bands, Tambora music can be heard day and night throughout the city during carnival.

In addition to traditional live music, the Mazatlan Carnival has colorful parades, fireworks, poetry, art and literature awards, carnival king and queen coronations. The party atmosphere fills the entire city and all the streets of Mazatlán are transformed into a sea of ​​people drinking and dancing the night away with all the different bands that go down the Malecón.
