Mazatlan, Sinaloa. – Since 1997, the dogs and cats of Mazatlan in a situation of vulnerability are not abandoned, because thanks to the great heart of a group of volunteers with love for animals, they have been able to be given the attention and affection that every living being needs. .

Dr. Julieta Alcocer Sánchez, a Dental Surgeon by profession, is the president of this shelter for stray, abused, and abandoned dogs and cats that ‘stole her heart’ for 6 and a half years. In an interview for Informative Reaction, Alcocer Sánchez recounted that everything started in 1997 when a group of foreigners concerned about cats and dogs decided to give them a space to recover.

“It was founded in 1997 by foreigners who realized that in Mazatlan there was no place where they could take a dog that had been hit by a car or from the street,” he said.

“It is focused on street animals, mainly abused and abandoned, we have also received from home, unfortunately, but I try to keep it to a minimum,” added the doctor.

He clarified that this adoption center does not act as a hotel or pension, in addition to having a well-documented adoption process, this in order to make sure that the home where the dog or cat lives is the most suitable.

“The process is simple and not at the same time; you have to come and bring a copy of the INE, a copy of the proof of address where the pet is going to live and here you are going to fill out an adoption certificate, you are going to sign a follow-up commitment that consists of photos and videos of how the pet is doing per week , if it is a puppy we deliver it to the home and a recovery fee is given, if it is a dog it is 550 pesos, if it is a cat 350 since they are delivered dewormed and with at least one vaccine and operated, “he explained.

Their commitment to each of the dogs and cats is so great that during the arrival of Hurricane ‘Nora’, they found temporary homes to shelter them and keep them safe. Despite having it all, Amigos de los Salvajes operates independently from any company and government program and that is why they constantly require donations in kind or money, in addition to having a bazaar of various items, where they obtain resources for the care of pets before they are adopted.

Likewise, Alcocer Sánchez stated that more volunteers are needed to help with the daily tasks of care, cleaning, and love.

Sometimes perching on a stack of documents, taking a seat at the front desk, or wandering the halls yawning, Gorda greets guests like the best boss anyone could have.

“She is the boss, her name is Gorda. She is the boss because everyone around her has to move”, she explained while being “supervised” by this sweet pet.

Despite the fact that Gorda is the one in charge, she previously shared her position with a dog called ‘La Once’, however, she recently retired, finding her home in the house of one of the volunteers who arranged her house so that she could spend her last days.

“We had another dog that we called ‘the eleven’, but last year she was adopted after staying here with us for about ten years, she was always here, loose. A volunteer offered me to take her with her so that she could spend her last years there, here it is like family, but it is not like having her own home,” the doctor said.
