The National Prohibition Committee will define today the date the 2020-2021 shrimp season will start.

Mazatlán, Sinaloa (August 27, 2020).- A few hours before the lifting of the shrimp ban is defined, the shipowners have no solution from the federal government regarding their request for a special price for diesel.

No response jas been received to the document sent to the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on the elimination of the IEPS to fuel.

For this reason, the fishermen and fishing entrepreneurs once again are carrying out a demonstration at the Conapesca facilities today, in order to define the dates for the start of the season in the Mexican Pacific. Fishermen say that they will remain outside the building until they get an answer from the federal government.

The president of the Union of Shipowners of the Pacific Coast, Jesús Omar Lizárraga Manjarrez, confirmed that since he did not have a satisfactory response to his demand, only 10% of the fleet made up of 500 boats will be able to go out to catch shrimp, and there will be around three thousand unemployed fishermen.

Lizárraga Manjarrez warned that the fishing activity is about to end because there is no certainty that the vessels can go out to sea.

He indicated that they will stay in the sit-in since “they are all in the same boat”, if the entrepreneurs are not supported, they will not be able to continue maintaining employment in the sector.
