The beaches of Mazatlán were considered by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), in joint work with Semarnat, the cleanest beaches to swim in the country. During the certification of the water quality of 267 beaches in Mexico to determine which represent or not a health risk for tourists, during this vacation period, the beaches of Mazatlan received one of the best grades, according to
The cleanest beaches where you can swim without worrying about the Enterococcus faecalis bacteria (which come from the feces of humans and animals) are Mazatlan, La Paz, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Huatulco, Tulum, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Riviera Maya, and Rosarito.
On the contrary, the Hornos beach, located in the port of Acapulco, which is one of the busiest destinations, is at the limit to be considered a sanitary risk, with 199 bacteria per 100 milliliters of water.
The beaches of Caletilla, Zihuatanejo, and Papagayo are also considered contaminated.
The World Health Organization dictates that if there are 200 fecal streptococci and enterococci per 100 milliliters of water, the place should be declared “unfit” for human habitation since they can cause gastrointestinal and acute respiratory diseases
