Rockslide at Cerro del Crestón Damages Vehicles in Mazatlán
On the morning of Monday, August 3, 2026, a rockslide occurred at Cerro del Crestón in Mazatlán, where large boulders broke loose and rolled downhill, striking several vehicles parked along the access road to the breakwater.
The incident was confirmed by Óscar Roberto Osuna Tirado, coordinator of the Municipal Civil Protection agency, who reported a preliminary toll of five damaged vehicles, two of them declared total losses, as well as two people who sustained minor injuries. The injured individuals were transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
“The Lighthouse will remain closed until further notice. We must ensure safe conditions for both people going up and those coming down. The breakwater and the Lighthouse will remain closed until conditions are verified. It was a very unfortunate accident, but fortunately there were no fatalities, only two people with minor injuries,” Osuna Tirado said.
Authorities From All Levels of Government Respond to the Emergency
Following the incident, personnel from the Mexican Navy, along with officers from Public Security and Civil Protection, responded to the scene. Authorities closed access to El Faro as well as the road leading to the breakwater.
The Municipal Civil Protection coordinator stated that authorities will conduct inspections of the Lighthouse area and the entire hillside to determine the cause of the rockslide. However, he noted that the recent heavy rainfall in Mazatlán may have softened parts of the hillside, contributing to the collapse.
Immediate Response at Cerro del Crestón
Authorities also confirmed that work began immediately to remove the rocks that fell onto the vehicles and roadway. Heavy machinery has already been deployed to clear the debris and reopen at least one lane of the affected road.
“We are using an excavator to remove the vehicles that were crushed,” Osuna Tirado explained.
As of now, authorities have not disclosed how many visitors were at El Faro at the time of the incident or how many people were evacuated from the area.
