Public safety officers and the anti-kidnapping unit thwarted a virtual kidnapping this Saturday at a hotel located in the northern part of the municipality.
A report to emergency services alerted authorities to a potential online extortion attempt.
According to the report from the Municipal Public Safety Secretariat, the young man was being held incommunicado inside the hotel while being subjected to phone calls from outsiders. These individuals were making multiple threats to his family and demanding money in exchange for his supposed release.
Thanks to the report received, the victim’s precise location was obtained, confirming that it was a virtual kidnapping, not a physical one.
After obtaining the information, the officers went to the hotel where the victim was located, making direct contact with him and verifying that he was safe.
Communication with the extortionists was severed, the crime was prevented, and the young man was taken to safety.
The young man and his family were taken before the State Attorney General’s Office, where they were placed at the disposal of the corresponding procedures and the legal follow-up of the case.
