Escuinapa was once again the scene of armed clashes between rival organized crime groups, with road blockades and a preliminary death toll of at least two indirect victims of the confrontation in the municipal seat of this municipality in southern Sinaloa.
The blockades occurred once again on the Mazatlán-Tepic highway. According to a statement from the State Public Security Secretariat (SSPE), work is already underway in the area to clear traffic, in conjunction with the National Guard’s highway division and Army personnel.
Just last Wednesday, the same municipality (which borders Nayarit to the south) was paralyzed by armed clashes both in its rural areas and in the municipal seat, causing a complete shutdown of activity that extended into the following day as a security measure.
The toll was three deaths classified as “from the confrontation” and at least three vehicles burned to block the highway.
In this latest armed clash, figures regarding the confrontation have not yet been confirmed; however, local media report at least two indirect victims.
Furthermore, the violence has not been limited to that area, as at least three murders and three properties burned and shot at were reported in Culiacán on Saturday night, while on Sunday, a cooler containing human remains was found in the community of Costa Rica, south of the capital.
Just on Saturday morning, 180 members of the Army’s Special Operations Corps arrived to support security efforts in the city.
However, just a few blocks from the State Attorney General’s Office in the Tres Ríos sector, armed groups broke into a house, setting it ablaze, resulting in an elderly woman suffering from smoke inhalation.
