Violence in Mazatlán claimed another victim on Saturday afternoon, when a 16-year-old boy died after being hit by a bullet during an armed attack on a city bus.
Although it was initially reported that the attack was directed against him, his family has denied this version, claiming that he was a collateral victim.
According to reports, the attack occurred near Óscar Pérez Escobosa Avenue, in the north of the city, leaving Sergio N seriously injured. He was taken to the General Hospital, where he underwent surgery in an attempt to save his life, but died five hours later from his injuries.
His sister, Alicia del Carmen Cornelio Tirado, publicly clarified that Sergio was not the target of the attack, but rather another passenger caught in the burst of gunfire.
“My brother was another victim of violence. He was only 16, and his dreams were cut short. He wasn’t a bad kid, he wasn’t involved in any shady dealings, nor was he up to any bad habits, as many have to say. He was going to see his girlfriend, to spend the afternoon with her, and without owing her or fearing her, his life was taken away,” she expressed with pain.
Alicia recounted that Sergio had taken public transportation to visit his girlfriend. On the way, he reported that the bus had collided with a vehicle and that the driver had begun a chase. She even managed to send a video from the vehicle showing the passengers lying on the ground during the tense moments.
Immediately, his girlfriend notified his family, who quickly went looking for Sergio, monitored by GPS location.
Later, she recounted that when the bus finally stopped, they came after him, but no authorities were present.
“My own mother had to get my brother out of the truck, wounded. We screamed and asked for help until the patrol cars arrived. Then an ambulance arrived, which took my brother to the hospital in serious condition, and a few hours later he died.”
Alicia lamented that her brother had become another victim of the violence that has plagued Mazatlán and the state.
Heartbroken by the void it has left in her family, she acknowledged that nothing will bring Sergio home, a 16-year-old whose dreams were cut short by bullets.
