A powerful explosion occurred on the morning of Friday, April 11, north of the city of Mazatlán, Sinaloa, leaving two people dead.

Municipal Civil Protection Coordinator Óscar Roberto Osuna indicated that the incident occurred in the community of El Chilillo.

“Unfortunately, we have two confirmed deaths at the scene,” the official said at a press conference.

According to the coordinator, the incident occurred at a company dedicated to handling explosive devices.

“The fireworks we commonly see at celebrations, weddings, and quinceañeras—that’s what they were dedicated to. It’s a family that has been working in this type of business for a long time,” he said.

He emphasized that this location is a legal powder magazine that has the corresponding permits from the Ministry of National Defense (Defense), so the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) will be in charge of the relevant investigations.

“Unofficially, relatives who arrived at the scene reported that the victims were the father and son,” he stated.

Authorities only reported damage to the site and to some vehicles near the warehouse that housed the finished product.

The area was cordoned off by members of the National Guard and the Navy (Semar) until the arrival of experts from the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF).

It has not yet been determined whether the explosion was an accident or arson.

It was reported that after the incident, the Defense Ministry began inspecting the municipality’s other fireworks centers to prevent another accident.

A video began circulating on social media that captured the moment of the powerful explosion on the outskirts of the tourist city, where smoke can be seen.
