This Saturday afternoon, a Navy convoy pursuing armed civilians was reported on a highway in the municipality of Mazatlán, Sinaloa. This ended with the death of an elderly woman who was struck by a stray bullet.
Initial reports indicate that the victim died after being hit by a bullet while traveling in a family car on the International Highway, near the community of La Urraca.
Regarding the chase, it was reported that it began around 1:20 p.m. near the turnoff to the airport. A few meters ahead, the Navy convoy and the SUV in which the alleged criminals were traveling caught up with the victim’s car, and when the driver stopped, he noticed that one of his companions had been shot in the head.
Unofficially, it was reported that the victim’s name was Martha “N,” a 65-year-old woman who, upon arrival at the emergency services, was no longer showing vital signs, according to the authorities’ report.
Security sources from the Sinaloa government confirmed that at least two people were injured, including a soldier. Both were taken to regional hospitals for treatment.
Meters away from where the Accord carrying the victim was found, authorities found a white Ford Explorer in the weeds and a double-cab Frontier pickup truck on the shoulder, presumably the result of a collision between the two vehicles.
Preliminary reports indicate that three armed civilians were killed during the accident, in addition to the elderly woman killed by a stray bullet; however, this information has not been confirmed by authorities. It was also reported that the white pickup truck was the same one the Navy was pursuing and that several armed men were traveling in it.
Upon arrival of personnel from the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo), Civil Protection, Firefighters, and the Sinaloa State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), they reported the presence of tire punctures lying on the road, which were removed by authorities.
This same afternoon, the murder of a merchant who tried to defend himself from a robbery in the Francisco Alarcón neighborhood of Mazatlán was reported. The authorities’ report states that armed men surprised him as he was opening his business, they struggled for a moment, and then one of the robbers shot him repeatedly and fled.
