Mazatlán needs more investment to attract high-class tourists.
Last week, the head of the State Tourism Department, Ricardo Velardes, informed that there might be a connection from Cancún to Mazatlán, which could attract European tourists to the port.
In response to this, the mayor stated that he hopes it happens, but said it is not easy because the service Mazatlán offers is not at the level to receive that type of tourism.
“It’s good, I hope it happens, but it’s not easy, we have to say it as it is. First, the distance, and second, the tourism hubs depend on what you offer. What I can tell you is that without different conditions, because the service Mazatlán offers is not yet at the level to receive high-class tourism.”
He also revealed that Mazatlán does not have 5-star hotels and lacks higher-level entertainment and recreation places, as Mazatlán is still developing and thus does not reach that level.
Édgar González Zatarain emphasized that Mazatlán can reach the required level faster, but this depends on agreements and the willingness of tourism investors to bet on the city.
“It can be close depending on whether tourism investors bet on Mazatlán, not just as a matter of winning at all costs. What happens is that when there is a lot of tourism, rates go up, some do not invest in modernization, they continue with the same. In this stage Mazatlán is in, which is developing, it might serve to start changing and that vision, that perspective that Mazatlán needs, and we can achieve it.”
He highlighted that Mazatlán needs entrepreneurs with the vision to empower and create more conditions to level up, like Ernesto Coppel and Amado Guzmán, who are diversifying and betting on Mazatlán to offer different things and thus attract another type of tourism.
