Trans women could be candidates to be queen of the Mazatlan Carnival

The Institute of Culture, Tourism and Art of Mazatlán published the calls for the International Carnival of Mazatlán 2024, leaving the space open for trans women to participate to be crowned as queen. 

Raúl Rico, director of Culture, pointed out that they know that it will be a topic that will cause debate among public opinion, so it will be left to the consideration of the organizing committee. 

Another change that was made in the guidelines is in terms of the age of the candidates for the Carnival and Floral Games crown, now young women between 17 and 27 years old, who are from Mazatlan by birth, single, without having been mothers, or married or in free union or who are pregnant, may participate. 

The candidates will be chosen through a previous casting that will consist of a video test, catwalk, photo session and an interview about the history of carnival and Mazatlán. 

Those interested will have until October 5 to register, since the official presentation of the candidates will be made on the 19th of the same month. 

While for those who want to be the King of Joy, they must only be from Mazatlan by birth or have a minimum of 3 years of residence. 

The transsexual community in Mexico resists discrimination 

Exposed to poverty, health problems, lack of opportunities and education; This is the reality of transsexual women in Mexico, a group that experiences inequality and discrimination in a system that resists change. 

According to information from the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (Conapred), the life expectancy of members of the trans community is 35 to 37 years, unlike the rest of the population, which is between 70 and 100 years. 

For its part, the National Survey on Sexual and Gender Diversity, carried out by the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (Inegi), reveals that 59.7% of the Trans population has suffered a situation of violence at least once in their lives. such as death threats, sexual attacks, verbal or psychological violence and public humiliation. 

The survey that they are one of the social groups with the greatest discrimination in the country, only behind indigenous communities or religious groups. This is reflected in the lack of opportunities that leads them to work in trades such as hairdressing or sex work.
