Sacred Art: The south of Sinaloa has a parish that ‘hides’ gold inside

In addition to having a gold-plated altar, it has a peculiar and impressive architecture inside and out

Our state is characterized by having a variety of sanctuaries, temples, and churches with endless peculiarities, architectures, and stories, but have you ever heard of one that was bathed in gold? Well, if you were surprised like us, you are in the right place.

Yes, you read that right, the altar of the Nuestra Señora del Rosario parish, located in the municipality and Pueblo Mágico of El Rosario, is bathed in gold and has a peculiar and impressive architecture inside and out.

Its style is Baroque, and in its altarpiece has a Greco-Roman, Baroque and Churrigueresque combination bathed in gold leaf. On its cover there are three quarry bodies with Solomonic columns and reliefs with decorative eagles.

In addition, it reflects the most splendor moment of the town: its mining past and its magical origin, the one that, according to a legend, in 1655, the foreman Bonifacio Núñez was chasing a cow; not reaching it, and as it was getting dark, he decided to wait and light a fire. The next day, among the ashes, he did not see the cow, but he did see some molten silver. He left a rosary to notify his boss of the discovery. When he returned with more men and they all dug, they found a vein of silver. And so, El Rosario was born.

This parish has a single tower, this in order to respect the original idea of the demolished one, although at some point it was thought to make it with two towers.

It is said that it was built in 1731, but it ended up being demolished in 1934 because it began to sink, but since Rosarenses are synonymous with union, they got down to work to transfer the church stone by stone to a new place, to found the new parish in 1954.

The Parish of Nuestra Señora del Rosario is not a cathedral, it must be clarified, because we only have two cathedrals in Sinaloa: The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary in Culiacán, and the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

Surely you did not know that a Church is a Cathedral only when it is the seat of the bishop, and that is that many people tend to attribute a church to being a cathedral only because of its appearance or architecture.

Now that you are more informed, you will surely want to visit this temple located in the municipality of El Rosario. Do not miss this opportunity and book this destination on your next vacation.
