The changes within the Mazatlán City Government continue, this Monday afternoon, Mayor Edgar González Zatarain appointed Jaime Othoniel Barrón Valdez as Secretary of Public Security and Municipal Traffic, who assumes the position that Simón Malpica Hernández had been holding.

Trajectory

The new police chief Barrón Valdez has a law degree, a specialty in criminal law and criminology, a master’s degree in criminal, accusatory and oral procedure law, a doctorate in the criminal justice system, and a doctorate in public security and police science, among other specialties.

In professional experience, he has served as director of the Municipal Police of Culiacán, and was a teacher at the State Institute of Criminal Sciences and Public Security, in the Capture Unit of the State Preventive Police in 2011; From 2013 to 2024 he was in the Gama Group of the State Preventive Police and in the Investigative Police of the Rino Group, during the period from November 2014 to August 2015, where he carried out investigation work on robberies committed in the shops of the Culiacan city.

In addition, he was a Legal Assistant in the Legal Department of the State Preventive Police, from August 2015 to October 2020, and was Legal Advisor of the “Elite” Group of the State Preventive Police, from October 2020 to date.

In recent days, the mayor had pointed out the possible changes of command in this secretariat in order to also restructure the strategy and strengthen public security in the face of the rise in crimes committed and the prevalence of the numbers of missing persons in the port.
