Emma did it to achieve the least harsh sentence possible because she could be sentenced to life imprisonment, just like El Chapo.

The former beauty queen turned herself in last February following accusations that she transmitted messages to help Guzmán Loera carry out drug trafficking from 2012 to early 2014 and continued to deliver messages while visiting him in a Mexican prison after his arrest. in February 2014.

Coronel’s arrest at Dulles International Airport is the highest-profile capture of a Mexican in the United States for drug trafficking since former Defense Secretary Salvador Cienfuegos was detained in October.

Coronel “worked closely with the command and control structure of the Mexican drug trafficking organization known as the Sinaloa Cartel, especially with her husband, Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, leader of the group,” said federal prosecutor Anthony Nardozzi. , at a hearing in federal court.

“The accused has access to criminal associates who are members of the Sinaloa Cartel, as well as to economic means that generate a serious risk of flight,” he added.

Emma Coronel, who has dual American and Mexican nationality, met Guzmán when she was a young beauty queen and married him in 2007 at age 18. The couple has two twin daughters. In 2019 he launched a clothing brand in the United States and appeared on a reality show in that country about mafia families.
