The Ministry of Health ( SSa ) reported that as of August 4 there are already 242,547 confirmed deaths in Mexico from COVID-19, as well as 2,901,094 accumulated cases. In other words, in the last 24 hours, there were 611 deaths and 20,685 new infections, the fourth-highest figure recorded in the entire pandemic and the highest in the third wave.

It should be remembered that the highest number of cases registered in Mexico was reported on January 21, 2021, with 22,339, followed by that of January 15 with 21,366 and the third was registered on January 22 with 21,007 cases from one day to the next.

The health agency also detailed that the number of COVID-19 cases in Mexico increased 20% in epidemiological week number 29, which includes July 11 to 17, compared to the previous one.

In this sense, Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Nuevo León, Jalisco, Veracruz, Guerrero, Tabasco, San Luis Potosí and Quintana Roo are the entities with the highest number of active cases (more than 3,000 cases); followed by Sonora, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Colima, Michoacán, Puebla, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Tamaulipas, Baja California Sur, Yucatán, Coahuila, Durango, Zacatecas and Chiapas as the entities with more than 1,000 cases of this type.

Regarding hospital occupancy, in the last 24 hours, 49 out of 100 general beds and 40 out of 100 beds were occupied with mechanical respirators for the most serious COVID-19 patients.

With these records, Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most deaths from COVID-19, behind the United States, Brazil, and India, and is sixteenth in the number of confirmed infections, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.

Vaccination against COVID-19 in Mexico

Mexico is close to reaching 50,000,000 vaccinated people since with a cut-off of 9:00 p.m. on August 3, 48,616,734 people over 18 years of the 32 states have at least one dose, which is equivalent to 54% of the adult population.

Of this total, 26,152,992, representing 54%, completed their vaccination schedule, and 22,463,742, that is, 46%, have a half schedule and are waiting to receive the second dose.
