According to UN data, every year around 13 million tons of plastic waste reach the oceans, with the aim of minimizing the impact that this situation generates on the planet, last Saturday, June 12th, Mexican Beer Company Corona, in alliance with México Recicla y MazConCiencia organized the first plastic fishing championship in Mazatlán, Sinaloa.
The large call was made up of around 60 fishermen aboard 30 boats that set sail from the Puntilla dock to clean the navigation channel between Isla de la Piedra and the Urías estuary in about four hours. These places have been severely impacted by the waste that tourists leave behind.
The initiative, the first of its kind, aimed to encourage the inhabitants of the area to generate self-employment, because after the fishermen returned to the dock, Daniel Beltrán, co-founder of México Recicla, provided information to the fishermen on the importance of collecting plastics to commercialize them with recycling plants that process and reuses it.
For her part, Daniela Téllez, in charge of Corona’s strategic management, recognized the work of the participants who at the end of the event managed to collect 2.9 tons of plastic waste, exceeding the expectations of the organizers.
At the end of the event, the first three places of the vessels that managed to collect more plastic were announced: the first place was obtained by Mr. Alejandro’s boat, which managed to capture 319 kilos of plastic and was credited with an economic incentive of 15,000 pesos. Second place was obtained by the Melissa boat, with 212 kilos of waste and a check for 10,000 pesos. While the third place was obtained by the boat baptized with the name of Moana Tequila, with a collection of 200 kilos of plastic and which was credited with 5,000 pesos.
It should be noted that all participants were recognized with a medal for their participation, as well as vouchers for gasoline and recycled plastic material for cleaning their boats.
Finally, the almost 3 tons of plastic recovered from the sea were collected by México Recicla, a company located in Ecatepec, State of Mexico, one of the municipalities with the most femicides in the country and that, in addition to promoting the circular economy, has 60% of women in their workforce, with the aim of empowering them and giving them economic independence.
Corona for its part, as a brand born on the beach and connected with nature, has worked hard to be the first beverage company with a net-zero plastic footprint in the world, for this reason, within the framework of World Oceans Day, it launched “Plastic Reality “, an augmented reality application that seeks to generate awareness in people by showing them their personal plastic footprint per year and offers advice on how to reduce it, with these actions, the brand reaffirms its commitment to the environment and the communities where it has a presence.
The directors of Corona, México Recicla and MazConCiencia urged to create awareness in the country’s inhabitants, because if they are not promoted and promote a circular economy in all industries and households, the oceans will be the most affected. Only in Mexico around 8 million tons of plastic garbage are generated per year and 32% is recycled, while in CDMX 90% of PET is recycled, but in the rest of the country it is reached 56% due to the lack of sufficient infrastructure to give waste a second life.
