American actor Matt Dillon premieres his documentary about the life of Cuban singer, entertainer and musician “El Gran Fellove”

With the documentary “El gran Fellove” American actor Matt Dillon, famous for his performances in movies such as “Drugstore Cowboy” or “There’s something about Mary”, recently made his directorial debut at the Morelia Film Festival (FICM), after having presented it in San Sebastián.

Over a period of four decades, Matt Dillon (New Rochelle, USA. 1964) has developed a prolific career as an actor with noteworthy films including The Outsiders (Francis Ford Coppola, 1983), Drugstore Cowboy (Gus van Sant, 1989), Singles (Cameron Crowe, 1992), Beautiful Girls (Ted Demme, 1996), There’s Something about Mary (Bobby and Peter Farrelly, 1998), Crash (Paul Haggis, 2004), for which he landed his only Oscar nomination, The House that Jack Built (Lars von Trier, 2018) and Proxima (2019), which competed in the Official Selection at San Sebastian. In 2002 he made his directorial debut with City of Ghosts. San Sebastian Festival presented him with its Donostia Award in 2006.  

“In Morelia, it will be like a homecoming from the movie because where it all really began was in Mexico for Fellove, that’s where they nicknamed as ‘El Gran Fellove’, and by the end of his life he was a Mexican citizen and all Cubans who live in our country agree that Mexico is a land of promise.

For him, Mexico was his home so we are going to bring this film back to his home, ” Matt Dillon told the Latin American media.

The project, which deals with the life of the Cuban musician, discovered by Dillon in the late 90s in a vinyl store in Havana, includes the American producer Jonathan Gray and the Mexican Carlos Sosa and Cristina Velasco.

El Gran Fellove is a documentary film from actor and filmmaker Matt Dillon, that chronicles the musical career of Cuban scat singer and showman Francisco Fellove and the recording of his last album. Through a series of interviews, archival photos and videos, as well as Matt’s own footage, the film recounts Fellove’s life as a struggling musician in Cuba, his eventual success in Mexico, and the contagious love he had for music until the very end.
