Rural House of the Year

Dezeen Awards is an annual award organized by the homonymous website, in which architectural firms, hotels, restaurants, museums, private homes, and even public buildings are considered.

Nominees are chosen from an open call, and winners are named by a panel of 75 architecture and design experts.

Of course, the participating buildings are beautiful (exterior and interior) and innovative but are also considered for their sustainability, eco-friendly, or a positive social impact on their location.

Casa Naila, created by the BAAQ ‘studio, received its award for the way it adapts to its environment and for offering closeness to nature for the people who stay there.

The name of Casa Naila came from a very famous song in the Isthmus region of Oaxaca.

The vacation home is located in Puertecito, a community 20 kilometers away from Puerto Escondido. It was built in 2019, with four independent buildings, which surround a cross-shaped patio; the different sizes of the buildings, their sloping roofs, and earthy tones are inspired by the rocky and uneven terrain of this coast.

On the ground floor, each building is made of reinforced concrete, while on the upper floor, wooden frames and palm were used, a traditional material in houses on the Oaxacan coast. The structures are designed to let in natural light and ventilation.

The land where Casa Naila was built is shaped like a point, so it offers two fronts to the sea, according to the architecture studio that created it. All rooms have views of the waves.

The floor is made of adobe and in the kitchen, there is a clay stove referring to the rural houses of Oaxaca.

Stay in it

The house has space for 10 guests, distributed in four rooms. There are four bathrooms.

It is a place to completely disconnect from the world, as it is relatively isolated and gives a lot of privacy. There are no televisions, but there is an internet connection. You can spend the day in the pool with your friends, swimming in the sea or snorkeling.

The place has the Airbnb Advanced Cleaning badge, as it has committed to follow the new biosecurity standards due to the pandemic.

One night for 10 people costs you 9,000 pesos (plus cleaning fee and taxes) and includes the service of two local chefs. The minimum stay is three nights.
