Activists affirmed that Queretaro same-sex couples have to resort to cities such as Huichapan, San Luis Potosí, Morelia, the State of Mexico, and Mexico City, to carry out their civil marriage.
The spokesperson for the Queretaro Front for the Right to Non-Discrimination and the Secular State, Walter López, denounced together with the activist Maricruz Ocampo Guerrero, that the mayor of the municipality of Querétaro, Luis Bernardo Nava Guerrero, “ he has no word ”, due to the restriction of equal marriages without protection.
Walter López stated that in the previous administration, presided over by Marcos Aguilar Vega, around 104 same-sex marriages were allowed; given the provision of not requesting protection before the civil registry.
In contrast, with the administration of Mayor Luis Nava, Walter López indicated that only two homosexual couples have been united in civil marriage in the first year of government, when in the past three years 33 couples were married on average per year.
“FROM 33 TO 2 COUPLES; THIS DIFFERENCE OF 31 COUPLES IS THE PRICE OF DISCRIMINATION FOR PUTTING A STONE IN THE WAY CALLED AMPARO. AND IT’S NOT THAT PEOPLE ARE NOT GETTING MARRIED, WE HAVE REFERENCES THAT THEY ARE GOING TO GET MARRIED IN OTHER PLACES, ”HE SAID.
For her part, Maricruz Ocampo said that “Luis Bernardo Nava backed down; because he had said at the beginning of his administration that he would not request protection in Querétaro, and later, he backed down. Our municipal president is a man without a word, because he also put that in writing, and announced it in the media. We cannot trust the Queretaro authorities because what prevails are the prejudices and the party lines.
Walter López explained that homosexual couples, with this determination, have to use the amparo appeal, which costs between 6,000 and 30,000 pesos, wasting time for those interested.
Likewise, he listed that same-sex couples go to neighboring states where this civil union is allowed, remembering that in Mexico, 21 entities already have legislation on the subject of equal marriages.
Among the preferred cities of the Queretans of the LGBT community to marry are Huichapan, San Luis Potosí, Morelia, the State of Mexico, and Mexico City, among others; warning that the economic spill of the celebrations stays in those places.
This situation, condemned Maricruz Ocampo, places homosexuals as “second-class citizens”, as their human rights are not respected in their own state.
We are declaring the government to ignore the Laws and exclude sexual diversity, since the Family Institute also attacks the diversity of Queretaro families.
He added that the OAS establishes that marriage is a human right; To which is added that since 2015, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation declared unconstitutional any Civil Code that requires marriage to be between a man and a woman, or that requires that the sole purpose of said union be to procreate. In addition, the LVIII Local Legislature already has two recommendations from the State Human Rights Ombudsman in which it indicates that it must make the corresponding adjustments in local regulations.
He also regretted that candidates for the mayor of Querétaro signed a commitment to respect the “natural marriage”, referring to one that takes place between a man and a woman, an action with which, he said, they only responded to the desire of a minority group in the entity, without taking into account that Querétaro has already changed, as have families.
“The candidates have not understood that Querétaro has already changed, and the governments are doing nothing to preserve the secularism of the state.”
Teresa García, rector of the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ) remarked that it is essential to make this a truly inclusive city, which requires respecting the differences between human beings.
“Sexual diversity, sexual preferences, is something that should no longer be a matter of division or of labeling people, sexual diversity exists, it has always existed, it seems to me that considering it taboo is something abnormal, and even disease, it is completely archaic. Although we live in a still conservative society, little by little the openness is taking place and in that sense, I think we must show that empathy for diversity, for different groups ”.
