The Institute of Transport and Development Policies (ITDP) included the city of La Paz, Baja California Sur in the “Cyclocities” ranking, through which they measure the promotion of sustainable and equitable transportation globally, this according to Frank Aguirre Riveros, who is the director of BCSicletos.
“The ranking is an evaluation of how much cities have grown in terms of sustainable mobility, specifically on bicycle lanes, but not only in infrastructure but in the use of the bike, public policies in favor of the bike, public transport policies, many things that revolve around the bicycle as a means of transportation, “he said.
He pointed out that in the city of La Paz in recent years cycling mobility has been promoted significantly, which has earned him his place within the Cyclocities ranking published a week ago, however, he noted that compared to what is missing to be done in this matter, the actions so far have been few.
“At least in the last 6 years, very little has been invested, but unlike other cities, because if it has been invested in public policies for bicycle mobility, the bicycle lanes that are on the Malecon that this government remodeled, lowered it from the sidewalk To the vehicular stream, that bike path was extended to Rangel Street with this municipal administration, and there was a private bicycle rental system that did not exist before.
But, to be honest, it is very little, there is a lot of opportunities to do more and due to political will it has not been done, but at least something has been done, ”he said.
Finally, he pointed out that small cities such as La Paz, face that most of the resources are destined for metropolitan cities.
“The main great disadvantage is the federal centralism that we suffer historically as a country since a lot of money is invested in healing metropolitan cities such as Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Tijuana… and very little is allocated to do preventive medicine in small and medium-sized cities like La Paz that do not have peripherals, second floors, road distributors, all this infrastructure that spoils cities. In the same way, this is an advantage so that bicycle routes are made, so that traffic is reduced and public transport is improved ”, he concluded.
