Mazatlan, Sinaloa. Although its arrival is in the first days of May, the little bird fish ” Pez Pajarito” already begins to be caught by fishermen from Mazatlan during the nights of this month.
The merchant, Jesús Cisneros Murillo, indicated that it is between 10 and 15 kilos of this species that are caught by the networks of seamen who work in the Mazatlan bay.
He clarified, it is only one fisherman who makes this type of catch, since not everyone goes out to look for it because there are few quantities that are presented before the season.
Currently, the little bird fish is caught by pangueros in the bay that is in the Marmol syndicate, a town that is located north of the municipality.
Last Monday they brought me 10 kilos and yesterday they brought me 5, and then it quickly sells for being a fresh product, which has just been taken out of the sea, which the customers like.
Despite not being a season, he acknowledged, there are times of the year in which the species is extracted as it has happened in the last two weeks, which surprises not only the fishermen but the general public.
Cisneros Murillo recalled that the sea specimen disappeared between 3 and 4 years, a situation that surprised everyone, due to the abundance it previously had in the region.
In 2019, he said, the birdfish season was very good, as there were records of up to 200 kilos per panga, although currently, it is worth up to 100 pesos per kilo.
