Joint operation of authorities leaves, as a result, eight people arrested for shooting in the air on December 31 and January 1, 2019

Culiacán, Sinaloa, January 1, 2019. – The Secretariat of Public Security of Sinaloa informs that the preventive operations implemented on the night of December 31 and the first hours of January 1, 2019, as part of the Peace and Security Plan of the Federal Government 2018-2024, resulted in the arrest of eight people for firing firearms.

The Secretary of Public Security of the State, Cristóbal Castañeda Camarillo, said that after receiving reports of detonation of firearms, he immediately went to the units, where he was succeeded by State Police, Military Police and Municipal Police in the arrest of six people, one of them of Canadian nationality, while the Federal Police assured two people who detonated firearms.

As a result of these detentions, seven short, three long and one grenade weapons were obtained, which were placed at the disposal of the competent authority for the crime of illegally carrying firearms.

As regards the reports to the 9-1-1 emergency line for firearm shooting, 35 calls were received, a number that decreased compared to 2017-2018 when 86 were counted in total.

The state official mentioned that calls were received to the emergency number in which he warned of at least three people who were injured with firearms in different events, to which competent authorities attended when they did not confirm these reports.

There is also a report on a person who died by gunfire in the municipality of Badiraguato, until the moment the State Attorney’s Office does not determine whether it was due to a direct assault or a stray bullet.

Castañeda Camarillo said that in a preliminary way there are five people injured by the use of pyrotechnic devices, another figure that represents a decrease since on the same dates of December 31, 2017, and January 1, 2018, 12 were burned by the use of these objects.

Within this preliminary count of results, he commented that 40 people were arrested throughout the state, mainly due to the use of fireworks and other administrative faults.

The operations to remove these products made from gunpowder continued on December 31, where 80 kilograms were removed from the streets.

He added that the corporations that participate in this security plan, patrols in bars and canteens, with the purpose of respecting the closing time of these nightclubs.

The Secretariat of Public Security of Sinaloa will continue with the reinforcement of crime prevention actions throughout the entity. Likewise, citizens are invited to cooperate with the authorities in order to achieve the tranquility that the state requires.
