Diver dies devoured in waters of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora

A diver died after being devoured apparently by sharks, in the Sea of Cortez.

On the morning of December 18, Nahum Verdugo Aguilera, 35, was diving in Hawey, an area located 10 kilometers from San Jorge Island, in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, when he was attacked for what he thinks was a shark.

When his companions took him out of the water they noticed that he was missing a leg and part of his abdomen, so they immediately took him in a panga to Puerto Peñasco. However, upon reaching shore the diver had already died.

It was around 11 in the morning when the Municipal Police was informed about what happened and expert services and maritime authorities went to the place.

According to the preliminary report, the victim was a native of San Carlos, Baja California, and his body had his left leg clenched from his hip.

The panga, which has the name “Lidia Isabel” was insured by the Ministerial Agency for Criminal Investigation.
