THE MAYAN TRAIN is not only for tourist, but B2B opportunities

ON DECEMBER 16 BEGIN THE WORKS OF THE MAYAN TRAIN. THE LARGEST INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT OF THE NEXT GOVERNMENT HAS HAD ITS CONTROVERSIES, BUT WHAT IS CERTAIN IS THAT IT IS A GOOD BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY. HERE WE TELL YOU HOW TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT.

The Mayan Train received 89.97% of votes in favor in the Citizen Consultation on November 24 and 25. As in most of the projects proposed by the new government, there has been a clash between different sectors of citizenship, but what is certain is that the work will be carried out. In fact, it starts next December 16th. But behind all this democracy debate, there is a great business opportunity waiting, and not just for big companies. SMEs can also take their part of the Mayan Train.

THE PROJECT

The main focus of the Mayan Train is to detonate tourism throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. Secondly, we also want to take advantage of the spill to support the businesses and businesses in the area with the movement of personnel and merchandise along the 1,500 kilometers of roads. That is ideal. The problems it faces are, basically, two: the opposition of indigenous communities and the possible ecological damage to the region.

The idea is that all international tourism that arrives in Cancun has a possibility of easy and accessible transit to Calakmul, in Campeche. With this, it would be possible to free the economic potential of Campeche, Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Chiapas and Tabasco. An intersection between the main cities and tourist and archaeological zones will also be created so that visitors do not stay in one place.

The train itself is a hybrid biodiesel locomotive, but the possibility is studied that in some sections (mainly jungles) only hydrogen will be used. It will have a speed of 160 km / h; it will pass through 15 stations and will have 1,525 km of roads on three routes. According to the project page, ideally, it will benefit four million people in the five states; of which, half live in poverty. All this, with an investment of between 120 and 150 billion pesos.

THERE ARE ALSO FOR SMES

One way in which SMEs can take advantage of all this is through multi-object financial corporations (sofomes). According to the president of Asofom, there will be a spill of 60 billion pesos. For this reason, Sofomes and other non-banking institutions are devising plans for SMEs to participate in the projects surrounding the Train. Basically, they serve as a cushion so that small businesses can obtain resources and grow with the arrival of the Train.

Credit and financing will be given for businesses that contribute to the project and the implementation of the Special Economic Zones. Specifically, companies from the industrial, hospitality, gastronomy, agro-industry and information technology sectors in the area are the ones that could benefit the most.

In terms of tourism, one of the main objectives is to potentiate Puerto Progreso, one of the most important in the Gulf of Mexico. Second, destinations such as Chichén Itzá, Izamal, Mérida will also receive much more visitors and new cultural offers will be created.

NOT EVERYONE HAS AGREED

  • As with the NAIM, many groups have been against the Train. Although the next head of the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples has said that they will not make decisions for the indigenous groups of the region, they are one of the most vocal detractors. Along with the citizen consultation, an “indigenous consultation” was carried out. Its objective is to know the community and non-personal wills of these groups, through their representatives.

More than 40 civil associations sent a statement to Andrés Manuel López Obrador saying that they have disapproved of the project since it was announced. They also rejected the public consultation, since someone outside the Peninsula should not decide what happens in it. They also believe that the entire exercise is in vain because they already have “budgets, bids, traces and even start date.” On the other hand, here you can read a letter that a group of academics from the country sent to AMLO to stop the consultation.

SOMETHING TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT

The airport in Cancun is saturated. No new slots are being designated for flights coming from Mexico City; that is, 80% of tourists who come to the area. With the Train, it is sought that more visitors can enter the Peninsula, which goes hand in hand with tourism. It is expected that the rate of hotel growth will be three thousand rooms per year when the normal is 400. To fill those rooms, you need all the possible influx of tourists.

In addition, all this development can make the Special Economic Zone (ZEE) of Tabasco more attractive for SMEs. Companies in the agro-industrial, plastic and machinery and equipment sectors can attract almost 1,500 million dollars of investment currently. If the EEZ and the Mayan Train begin to work together, this number could grow rapidly. For now, 80% of the suppliers of this EEZ are SMEs from the surrounding municipalities, mainly in the sectors of services, commerce, construction, agro-industry, beverages, and manufacturing. May, in addition to tourism, the Mayan Train can bring business opportunities to those who know how to search. If you do not know what the special economic zones consist of, here we explain it to you.
