The Secretary of Tourism (Sectur), Enrique de la Madrid, warned that if the construction of the New Mexico City International Airport (NAICM) is canceled, the Mayan Train could not be carried out because it would affect the rating of the external debt of the country and the confidence of foreign businessmen.

On the rating of the debt, higher interest rates could be paid or many international funds would stop investing in the country; In addition, the message would be sent that the government can pull a plan from one day to the next, he explained.

“Canceling the construction of the NAICM will affect Mexico’s external debt, because it will no longer be a reliable country because infrastructure projects will not be completed, and higher interest rates will be paid as a result of the liabilities caused by allocating more money to the financial commitment to the construction of public works, “said the head of Sectur.
Despite this statement, De la Madrid considered that the work of the Train is an “attractive” project because it will capitalize on the millions of visitors that enter Mexico through Cancún, Quintana Roo.

“By requiring private investment and, trans-sexennial project, even if they say four years, nobody will invest in a country where investments are not respected. If we want the train, we need an airport, “he said.

One of the proposals of President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador is the Mayan Train, which at first had contemplated 900 kilometers; He then informed that it will be extended to 1,500 kilometers and will pass through the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán.
