Former Mexican Navy Rear Admiral Fernando Farías Laguna arrived back in Mexico on August 20, 2026, following his detention and deportation from Argentina. The 47-year-old former officer was transported aboard a Mexican Navy aircraft in a joint operation organized by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), and the Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection (SSPC).

Capture and Departure from Buenos Aires

Farías Laguna had been a fugitive since 2025, when Mexican authorities issued a warrant for his arrest. He was captured by the Argentine Federal Police on April 23, 2026, in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires following an Interpol red notice requested by Mexican prosecutors.Investigators revealed that he had entered Argentina from Colombia using a fraudulent Guatemalan passport under the false alias Luis Lemus Ramos.

While in Argentine custody for nearly four months, Farías Laguna requested political asylum. However, Argentine authorities finalized his expulsion, clearing his return after Mexican officials streamlined the legal proceedings in coordination with international partners, including assistance from U.S. authorities.

The “Huachicol Fiscal” Fuel Smuggling Ring

Mexican prosecutors accuse Farías Laguna of being one of the central leaders of a vast fuel smuggling network, known locally as “huachicol fiscal,” alongside his brother, Vice Admiral Manuel Roberto Farías Laguna. The criminal organization, dubbed “Los Primos,” allegedly operated through maritime customs ports—including Tampico, Altamira, and Manzanillo—to illegally import fuel into Mexico using fraudulent customs declarations and administrative bribery schemes.

The extensive investigation gained momentum following the March 2025 seizure of the Challenge Procyon vessel in Tampico, Tamaulipas, where authorities confiscated 10 million liters of illicit hydrocarbons.According to the FGR, 15 other individuals linked to the smuggling ring have already been apprehended.

Upon his return to Mexican soil, Farías Laguna was formally placed in federal custody to face prosecution for organized crime and hydrocarbon offenses. He was subsequently transferred to the maximum-security Altiplano federal prison.
