Cafes are growing in Mazatlán despite business closures and economic crisis

Amid the economic difficulties that have affected various business sectors in Mazatlán, coffee shops have become one of the main alternatives for those looking to start a business or remain economically active, stated Francisca Cázares Oliveros, president of the Mazatlán National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism.

The business leader indicated that, although business closures continue to be a reality in the municipality, there are also entrepreneurs opting for more accessible models with lower operating costs, such as coffee shops, which have experienced growth in the city.

“It can’t be said that there aren’t business closures, of course there are, but there are also, albeit minimally, new openings,” she said.

A few weeks ago, Cázares Oliveros reported that around 900 small and medium-sized businesses have closed in Mazatlán due to the economic impact of the violence plaguing the region. However, she specified that one of the sectors that has shown growth is the coffee shop sector.

“Coffee shops are becoming increasingly popular; the fact that you can arrive, get your hot or cold coffee, sit down, and enjoy it peacefully, or even get some work, is proving very successful,” she commented.

According to data from Canaco Mazatlán, 236 coffee shops have been counted along the coastal stretch between Miguel Alemán Avenue and Rafael Buelna Avenue, reflecting the expansion of this business model in recent years.

The president of Canaco believes that part of this phenomenon is due to the fact that coffee shops represent a more practical entrepreneurial option with lower operating costs compared to other types of businesses.

“Coffee shops are a business that is proliferating, perhaps because they are simple, economical, and practical, and they don’t require a large staff, which is often what contributes to the social burden,” she noted.
