After more than 24 hours of searching, the triathlete who had gone missing during a competition held in the port of Mazatlán was found dead this Monday morning.

The victim was identified as Julián Alejandro “N,” 31 years of age, a native of Culiacán. The discovery was made around 6:20 a.m., when a citizen exercising along the malecón (seaside promenade) spotted a body on the beach area located across from the Ferrocarrilera neighborhood and alerted authorities.

According to initial reports, the surf carried the body to the shore, where it was subsequently located by emergency response teams.

The athlete’s disappearance was reported at the conclusion of the triathlon held on Sunday, May 31, at Playa Norte, after fellow participants noticed that he had not returned to retrieve his belongings.

Upon receiving the report, members of the Municipal Public Security Secretariat’s Aquatic Rescue Squad—along with personnel from the Mexican Navy’s Naval Search, Rescue, and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR)—launched a maritime search operation utilizing jet skis and specialized vessels. However, the efforts undertaken throughout Sunday failed to locate the athlete.

The area where the body was found was cordoned off by rescue personnel, while forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s Office conducted the necessary investigative procedures and ordered the body’s transfer to the Forensic Medical Service.
