With bright colors and pretty designs, the crafts made by Sofia Vázquez Cortez, originally from Oaxaca, steal the gaze of tourists and locals who walk along the side of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, in the center of the city.
In the heart of Mazatlán tourism, the artisan woman said she sells her products in order to support her young children.
To do this, she mentioned that she only wants the municipal authorities to give her the opportunity to work without complications, since she said that she has asked for help from the Mayor’s Office department of the municipal council, but they have not provided her with the conditions to work with permission and without problems.
“I dedicate myself to making my crafts; for example, the flowers, the hummingbirds, they are purely artisanal. I come here for a few days just to work and support my children because I live from this, I do not have another steady job. Right now I am struggling with the inspectors. I have gone to speak with the chief officer to ask them to do me the favor of letting me work to support my children, but they do not want to give me a chance, they are not giving me any opportunities.”
Vázquez Cortez invited locals and tourists to visit Mazatlán and buy crafts made by Mexican artisans, by local artisans.
The woman from Oaxaca called on people to consume Mexican crafts, something that is a small part of the great cultural wealth of the country. She asked them to please value the hours of effort and work that are dedicated to each craft, and for that reason avoid buying low-quality “Mexican” crafts from commercial manufacture in other countries.
Palm flowers cost 100 pesos due to the hard manual work that takes 3 days to make. She also sells key chains and beaded pendants, as well as bags made with leather and palm.
